Industry Leadership

With academic training in physics and electronics, and many years in machinery design and manufacture, a unique perspective is brought to the challenges encountered by those in the industry. About John Andrews

John Andrews is the Principal of Powel Enterprises. Over the past 20 years, he has been involved with multiple TRB Committees, Expert Task Groups and Pooled Funds that have guided the field. He has been the primary author of several AASHTO standards and papers focused on improving the state-of-the art.

Over 50 years of work experience, the most recent 20 at the Maryland State Highway Administration, provides a perspective to a program or project that has a multidiscipline foundation in both training and experience.

Training BS in Physics from Johns Hopkins and numerous short courses and seminars, including computer programming and the Dale Carnegie Leadership and Management series.

Technical Experience Electronic and mechanical design in the medical instrumentation, industrial machinery, construction, and vehicle fields

Managerial Experience Led numerous groups, from small design teams to 120-technician manufacturing operations

Recent Accomplishments

  • A significant contributor to multiple AASHTO standards for highway data collection

  • Advancement of NDT methods including the application of GPR for pavement and bridge deck evaluation.

  • Development of two increased resolution skid testing methods

  • Trailer design for 3-D Radar antenna equipment
